Business Bureau:
New Delhi, February 12, 2026: The Consumer Price Index (CPI) increased from 1.33% in December 2025 to a provisional 2.75% in January 2026, following the revision of the base year from 2012 to 2024. The update is based on the findings of the Household Consumption Expenditure Survey 2023–24.
“Going forward, better data accuracy and stronger supply-side management will benefit both industry and overall macroeconomic stability,” said Mr. Rajeev Juneja, President of PHDCCI, in a press statement issued today.
The rise in inflation was primarily driven by higher prices in personal care items, social protection and other miscellaneous goods and services, education services, and clothing. Although Food and Beverages carries the largest weight in the CPI basket at 36.75%, it recorded a moderate inflation rate of 2.11%, he noted.
Mr. Juneja further stated that the five items witnessing the steepest price increases were silver jewellery, tomato, coconut (copra), gold/diamond/platinum jewellery, and coconut oil. Silver jewellery topped the list, registering an increase of approximately 160%.
Despite the January uptick, overall inflation remains comfortably within the Reserve Bank of India’s target range.

Dr. Ranjeet Mehta, CEO and Secretary General of PHDCCI, said the provisional inflation rate of 2.75% for January 2026 indicates relatively stable consumer prices, which are crucial for business planning, investment decisions, and household welfare. He added that transparent measurement of inflation enhances economic confidence and supports effective monetary and fiscal policymaking.
Ahead of India’s AI Impact Summit, the Chemicals and Plastics Committee of PHDCCI) recently organized an Industry B2B Interaction on “India’s Semiconductor Opportunities & Global Partnerships” at its secretariat.
The forum brought together policymakers, industry leaders, academia, and technology experts to deliberate on India’s rapidly evolving semiconductor ecosystem, the organisation informed TheNewsSite. In .
