At the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant construction site, located in India’s Tamil Nadu, engineers have installed the reactor pressure vessel for Unit 5 into its design position, marking a key milestone in the project’s next phase, Russian government informed TheNewsSite.In.
The operation, carried out on June 15, was executed with the participation of the Engineering Division of the Rosatom State Corporation, the project’s general designer and contractor. The heavy-lift installation used the “open-top” method, in which large components are placed into the reactor building using a high-capacity crane before the containment dome is erected. The same approach was previously applied successfully by Russian and Indian specialists during construction of the plant’s second phase.
The reactor pressure vessel was manufactured at Atommash, part of Rosatom’s machine-building complex in Volgodonsk, Russia’s Rostov region, sources told TheNewsSite. In . The equipment delivered to the Kudankulam site in 2025 has a total weight of approximately 300 tonnes, the authorities confirmed.

Following installation, construction will proceed with assembly of key reactor systems, including steam generators, main circulation pumps, coolant pipeline modules, the pressurizer, and emergency core cooling system tanks.

Mikhail Novikov, Director for Projects in India at Atomstroyexport, highlighted the long-standing cooperation between Russia and India, noting that Indian specialists are currently building four additional Russian-designed units at the site, while two units have already been supplying electricity for more than a decade. He described the project as a reflection of sustained joint efforts to strengthen bilateral energy cooperation
