Evian, France, June 16, 2026: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney held bilateral talks on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Evian, France, reaffirming their commitment to strengthening India–Canada relations and advancing a forward-looking strategic partnership.

The pair welcomed the positive momentum in bilateral ties since Prime Minister Carney’s visit to India in March 2026 and highlighted the strong complementarities between the Indian and Canadian economies. They emphasized the importance of resilient supply chains in ensuring global energy and food security.

A major focus of the discussions was economic cooperation, MEA stated in a release. Both sides expressed satisfaction with progress in negotiations for a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) and reiterated their shared goal of concluding the trade pact by the end of 2026. The leaders also reviewed developments in commercial arrangements related to liquefied natural gas (LNG), liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), and metallurgical coal.

The meeting underscored growing engagement between the two countries through high-level visits and institutional dialogues. The leaders welcomed recent exchanges, including Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal’s visit to Canada, and looked forward to a Canadian trade mission to India later this year.

In a significant step toward enhancing defence and security cooperation, India and Canada agreed to begin negotiations on a General Security of Information Agreement (GSOIA). The leaders also welcomed increased collaboration between defence institutions.

The two countries further noted ongoing cooperation under the Canada–India Talent and Innovation Strategy, aimed at promoting skill development, innovation partnerships, and educational exchanges.

Prime Minister Modi also expressed India’s support for Canada’s bid to become a Dialogue Partner of the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA).

Additionally, both leaders announced the establishment of “Raisina Americas,” a new platform designed to strengthen dialogue, exchanges, and cooperation between the two nations and the wider Americas region.

Prime Minister Modi thanked Prime Minister Carney for inviting him to visit Canada later in 2026. Both sides agreed to remain in contact through diplomatic channels to finalize mutually convenient dates for the visit.

The meeting signals a continued thaw and strengthening of India–Canada relations, with trade, energy, defence, and people-to-people ties emerging as key pillars of the expanding partnership.
