NEW DELHI/MUMBAI — Queen Máxima of the Netherlands will arrive in India on June 23 for a high-profile three-day state visit as the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Advocate for Financial Health (UNSGSA), placing global attention on India’s remarkable financial inclusion journey and the next challenge facing the world’s fastest-growing major economy: improving the financial well-being of its people, sources in UN confirmed TheNewsSite.in .

This will be Queen Máxima’s fourth visit to India in her UN capacity, following previous visits in 2014, 2018 and 2022, sources in UN told TheNewsSite.in on Monday morning.

The visit comes as the country is being hailed internationally for one of the most significant financial inclusion transformations in modern history. Over the past decade, the share of Indian adults with access to a financial account has surged from 56 percent to nearly 89 percent, bringing hundreds of millions into the formal financial system, the UN said in a statement.

Yet as India celebrates this achievement, policymakers and financial experts are increasingly focused on a critical question: how to ensure that access to banking translates into stronger financial security, resilience and prosperity for households.

During engagements in Mumbai and New Delhi, she will meet financial service users, government officials, regulators, fintech innovators, development organizations and business leaders to examine how financial services can help Indians manage daily expenses, withstand economic shocks, save for future goals and build long-term financial confidence.

The visit is expected to conclude with a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, where she will share insights and recommendations from her discussions across the country.

Spotlight on India’s Financial Transformation

India’s financial inclusion success has become a global case study, driven by initiatives such as the Jan Dhan programme, digital payments infrastructure and rapid fintech innovation.

Queen Máxima’s agenda reflects a shift from measuring access to measuring outcomes.

Her first day in Mumbai will focus on understanding how financial services are affecting people’s lives on the ground. She will meet young customers of digital banking platform Jupiter Money to explore how technology is reshaping saving, investing and money management for a new generation of Indians.

She will also interact with nurses at HCG Colaba Hospital who benefit from workplace financial health products offered through SalarySe, highlighting efforts to strengthen financial security through employer-linked solutions.

A key engagement will be a focus group with beneficiaries of the government’s Jan Dhan programme. Hosted by MicroSave Consulting, the discussion will provide direct insight into the financial challenges, aspirations and opportunities facing low-income households.

AI, Innovation and the Fight Against Digital Fraud

India’s rapidly expanding fintech sector will be another major focus of the visit.

Queen Máxima will participate in a roundtable convened by the International Finance Corporation (IFC) and Flourish Ventures, bringing together private-sector leaders to discuss how artificial intelligence can be used to provide personalized financial guidance and help consumers make better saving and investment decisions.

The discussions will also address one of the biggest threats accompanying digital growth: online fraud.

A dedicated showcase will examine the rise of digital scams in India and ongoing efforts by industry and regulators to protect consumers as financial transactions increasingly move online.

Meetings with RBI and Financial Health Experts

On June 24, Queen Máxima will chair discussions on measuring consumer financial health and evaluating whether financial products are genuinely improving people’s economic well-being.

She will also participate in a roundtable organized by CGAP focused on women’s financial health, an area that remains critical despite significant gains in financial inclusion.

The Mumbai leg of the visit will conclude with a meeting with Reserve Bank of India Governor Sanjay Malhotra, where discussions are expected to focus on how regulation and policy can support stronger financial health outcomes across the country.

New Delhi Focus on Digital Public Infrastructure

The final day of the visit will shift attention to New Delhi and India’s globally recognized Digital Public Infrastructure ecosystem.

Queen Máxima will hear presentations from leading Indian fintech companies showcasing innovative solutions designed to improve financial health and expand economic opportunity.

At the United Nations House, the UN India office and the EkStep Foundation will co-host a roundtable examining how Digital Public Infrastructure can further strengthen financial resilience and inclusion.

She will also meet informal-sector workers, including golf caddies and domestic workers, who have gained access to retirement savings through pension inclusion initiatives supported by Universal Pensions. Their experiences are expected to highlight both the progress made and the challenges that remain in extending financial security to millions of workers outside the formal economy.

Meeting with Prime Minister Modi

The visit is expected to culminate in a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, underscoring the importance India places on financial inclusion and financial health as pillars of economic development.

Supported by global partners including CGAP, the Gates Foundation, the International Finance Corporation, Better Than Cash Alliance, Flourish Ventures and the United Nations, Queen Máxima’s mission reflects a growing international consensus that financial inclusion is only the first step.

The next phase is ensuring that financial systems help people build resilience, achieve their goals and secure a more stable future.
