BEIJING — In a landmark move to redefine regional security and connenctivity infrastructure, Bangladesh and China have agreed to explore a groundbreaking “2+2” dialogue mechanism on diplomacy and defense while elevating their relationship to a “comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership”, TheNewsSite.in learnt from sources on Friday. This new era of cooperation, announced during Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s maiden visit to Beijing, is anchored by massive infrastructure commitments, including the modernization and expansion of Mongla Port and a bold pursuit of direct connectivity between the two nations.

The new “2+2” mechanism is supported by a pledge to deepen defense cooperation through increased personnel training, high-level visits, and equipment exchanges. Politically, the alignment is absolute: Bangladesh reaffirmed its “strong commitment” to the one-China principle, explicitly opposing “Taiwan independence” and recognizing Taiwan as an inalienable part of Chinese territory.
China consumed about $1.3 billion worth of goods from Bangladesh, Thenewssite.in learnt. The leaderships discussed ways to mitigate trade gaps.
Breaking the Teesta Deadlock
In what is being viewed as a major diplomatic win for Dhaka, China has officially pledged to provide support and assistance for the Teesta River Comprehensive Management and Restoration Project (TRCMRP). Both nations have agreed to expedite the feasibility study for the project, with China offering its expertise in integrated water resources management, river dredging, and flood prevention to resolve the long-standing water security challenge.
Industrial Powerhouses and Trade Dominance
The economic pillar of the “Shared Future Partnership” focuses on transforming Bangladesh into an industrial hub. Key developments include:
Chattogram Industrial Hub: Both sides committed to the rapid development of the Chinese Economic and Industrial Zone in Chattogram.
Trade Incentives: To upgrade Bangladesh’s export capacity, China reaffirmed its zero-tariff treatment on 100 percent of tariff lines.
Modernization Synergy: China will pursue greater synergy with Bangladesh’s development plans, focusing on both “major signature projects” and “small and beautiful” livelihood initiatives.
Global Ambitions: BRICS and the SCO
China has thrown its weight behind Bangladesh’s global integration, officially supporting its participation in BRICS and its application to become a partner of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO). Furthermore, China pledged to continue its role as a facilitator in the Rohingya crisis, supporting “friendly consultations” between Bangladesh and Myanmar to find a mutually acceptable solution for displaced persons from the Rakhine State.
