SEOUL — India and South Korea (ROK) have prioritized shipbuilding and defense and security cooperation as the cornerstones of their evolving alliance, following a high-level strategic visit by External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar to Seoul, MEA said in an announcement . The state visit, held from June 24–25, 2026, focused on accelerating the India-South Korea Special Strategic Partnership and implementing the major industrial and security objectives established during the South Korean President’s state visit to India earlier this year .

Building on Presidential Momentum

The bilateral talks between Minister Jaishankar and South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun served as a critical follow-up to the April 2026 state visit of President Lee Jae Myung to India . The ministers reviewed a broad “gamut of bilateral relations,” emphasizing progress in several high-growth sectors:

Industrial Synergy: A dedicated focus on shipbuilding, trade, investment, and financial cooperation .

Innovation and Tech: Strengthening ties in emerging technologies and startups .

Human Capital: Continued cooperation in culture, education, and people-to-people exchanges .

Security and Regional Assessments

Beyond industrial ties, the visit reinforced a shared vision for regional stability. Minister Jaishankar held a separate meeting with Wi Sung-lac, South Korea Director of National Security, to exchange assessments on pressing regional and global developments .

Future Institutional Cooperation

To maintain this “renewed momentum,” the two ministers agreed to remain in close communication regarding the outcomes of recent high-level exchanges . Minister Jaishankar officially invited Foreign Minister Cho Hyun to India for the next meeting of the India-South Korea Joint Commission, which will serve as the next major platform to deepen bilateral cooperation in the years ahead .

In his X Post, Dr. S Jaishankar wrote, “The world today is undergoing a complex rebalancing – economic, political and cultural. While economic interdependence, connectivity and a global workplace have brought it closer; leveraging of production, commerce and technology rivalry are creating new tensions. Underlined the imperative of reinventing cooperation in a fragmented world through :Strengthening resilience and redundancy for de-risking international economy and diversifying production and supply chains.Forging new understanding and closer relationships to stabilise the global order and address issues through agenda – specific cooperation.

Collectively promoting international law and regimes.

Enhancing capacities and opportunities for the Global South to foster global growth.

Providing global goods through common and shared endeavours. This must be expressed in reformed multilateralism.”
