Jakarta: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday addressed a reception for the Indian community in Jakarta, where he received a warm welcome from members of the Indian diaspora and Indonesian friends of India. In a special gesture reflecting the close ties between the two countries, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto joined the Prime Minister at the event. India and Indonesia share more than 2,000 years of civilizational and cultural ties. Indonesia is home to nearly 150,000 Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) and around 15,000 Non-Resident Indians (NRIs), with the community continuing to play an important role in strengthening relations between the two countries, the Ministry of External Affairs stated.

Addressing the gathering, Modi thanked the Indian community for the enthusiastic reception and described President Prabowo as “a great leader and a true friend of India.” He praised the Indian diaspora for its contribution to Indonesia’s development and prosperity, calling it a living bridge between the two nations.
Reaffirming India’s commitment to strengthening bilateral ties, the Prime Minister said the partnership with Indonesia is anchored in mutual trust, shared cultural heritage, and centuries-old maritime links. He also highlighted the deep civilizational connections between the two countries, citing traditions such as Bali Yatra, the Vesak pilgrimage, and academic linkages through Nalanda University.
Speaking about India’s recent progress, PM Modi highlighted achievements in infrastructure development, the startup ecosystem, and social welfare programmes, noting that more than 250 million people have been lifted out of poverty. He said India has remained the world’s fastest-growing major economy for several years and has emerged as a key driver of global growth.

The Prime Minister urged the Indian community to contribute towards the shared national visions of Viksit Bharat 2047 and Indonesia Emas 2045, while reaffirming India’s commitment to supporting growth and prosperity in Indonesia and the wider ASEAN region.
