President Murmu to Visit Moldova, North Macedonia, Romania, Takes Diplomacy beyond EU

President Droupadi Murmu will undertake a week-long State visit to Moldova, North Macedonia and Romania from July 19 to 25, in a diplomatic outreach that underscores New Delhi’s growing focus on Eastern Europe, with two first-ever presidential visits and the first presidential trip to Romania in more than three decades, TheNewsSite.in learnt.

The state visit, coming amid India’s efforts to diversify its political and economic engagement across Europe, is aimed at expanding cooperation in trade, technology, healthcare, agriculture and education, while strengthening political partnerships in a strategically important region.

While India’s engagement with Europe has traditionally centred on major powers in the P5 such as France, Germany and the United Kingdom, New Delhi has increasingly sought to broaden its footprint in Central and Eastern Europe. The outreach aligns with India’s efforts to secure resilient supply chains, diversify trade partners and build support within European institutions on global issues.

Romania, an EU member and NATO ally, has emerged as an important partner in sectors such as defence manufacturing, energy and information technology. Moldova and North Macedonia, though smaller economies, offer opportunities for cooperation in agriculture, pharmaceuticals, healthcare, digital technologies and education. The visits also come after India and the European Union concluded a long-pending Free Trade Agreement, which both parties believe would provide an additional impetus to economic ties.

In Moldova on July 20, President Murmu will hold delegation-level talks with President Maia Sandu, meet Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu, interact with the Moldova-India Parliamentary Friendship Group, address a business forum and meet members of the Indian community. The visit will be the first by an Indian President since diplomatic relations were established.

In North Macedonia on July 21-22, the President will hold talks with President Gordana Siljanovska-Davkova, meet Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski and parliamentary leaders, address the Assembly, and participate in an India-North Macedonia Business Forum. It will also be the first visit by an Indian Head of State.

In Romania from July 23 to 25, Ms. Murmu will meet President Nicușor Dan, interim Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan and senior parliamentary leaders, besides interacting with the Romania-India Parliamentary Friendship Group, addressing a business forum and meeting the Indian diaspora. The visit will be the first by an Indian President since the early 1990s.

Why it matters

The significance of the tour lies less in the announcement of major agreements and more in the diplomatic signalling. Presidential state visits are among the highest forms of bilateral engagement and are often intended to provide political momentum to economic and strategic partnerships.

For India, the tour reflects an attempt to broaden its European engagement beyond traditional partners, cultivate goodwill among countries in Eastern Europe, and create new avenues for trade and investment. The emphasis on business forums across all three countries also indicates that economic diplomacy will be a central theme of the visit.

Taken together, the three-nation tour reinforces India’s strategy of engaging a wider spectrum of European partners at a time of evolving geopolitical alignments and expanding India-EU cooperation.
