Jharkhand’s Student Protest Enters Day 18, Students March to Assembly House

RANCHI, Jharkhand — In a state where the dream of a government job often feels like a relay race with a missing baton, thousands of students have turned Ranchi into a prolonged classroom on democracy. Their lesson plan: cancel compromised exams, order an independent probe, and rebuild a recruitment system that doesn’t need a protest to function, followed by series of protests in Delhi’s Jantar Mantar.

The 2026 Jharkhand student protests began over alleged irregularities in the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) and Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC) examinations, quickly swelling into a statewide movement now on its 18th day.  At the centre of the agitation are three demands that have become the protesters’ mantra: cancel the disputed 14th JPSC Civil Services Preliminary Examination and related backlog tests; order a credible investigation—preferably by the CBI or a panel of retired High Court judges from outside the state—into alleged paper leaks and OMR manipulation; and institute structural reforms to restore transparency in future recruitments.

Jharkhand Govt’s response has been a mix of concessions and cautions. On Sunday, three JPSC members resigned, and the state announced it would cancel the 14th JPSC prelims along with two backlog examinations, while ordering CID and Enforcement Directorate probes into financial irregularities.  Officials later claimed that “approximately 98%” of student demands had been addressed— a statistic that, protesters note, still leaves the 2% that matters most (an independent, court-monitored inquiry) unresolved.

On Monday, the protest escalated as aspirants marched toward the Assembly, only to be met with water cannons, tear gas, and lathicharges.  Student leader Devendra Nath Mahto, whose indefinite hunger strike has drawn comparisons to Sonam Wangchuk’s Ladakh activism, was hospitalised after the crackdown, even as organisers vowed to continue the stir until their core demands are met.

Politically, the agitation is awkward for the Congress-aligned state government, even as the party nationally has centred its messaging on exam integrity and youth opportunity.  The BJP, meanwhile, has called a statewide bandh on August 11 in support of the students, turning an education issue into a broader contest over governance credibility. https://www.instagram.com/p/Db2xjKdifM6/?utm_source=ig_web_button_share_sheet

For now, the movement shows no sign of winding down. Protesters say they will keep up the pressure until a credible, independent inquiry is announced, warning that without it, the “Vidhan Sabha March” could become a recurring feature in Jharkhand’s political calendar.
